A Competition for a large German car company
CONCEPT (multiple resolutions expressing the process of
creation, experience and use of the BMW automobile: these multiple resolutions
also serve to describe the architecture as a series of high and low pressure
zones at multiple resolutions) “the double cone can without limitation
be integrated into and used within the communication concept of an experience
location”
double cone as the 'brain' and 'soul' (technology + art) of BMW (an integration
of and an oscillation between these aspects is what is offered by BMW
to the driver and what the exhibition/architecture experience offers as
an attempt at highlighting these experiences without actually driving
the car)
concept: the experience of the car as the diagram for the
architecture/media/automobile/user interactions and evolutions. the goal
is to incorporate the different resolutions experienced when using the
car at standard performance and uniting with the car at high performance.
Resolution at no speed (expose): the car as an object and its environment
is perceived by the viewer at a high visual resolution but a low experiential
resolution.
Resolution at slow speeds (explore): car as a machine allowing the driver
to experience the outside world. when traveling at slow speeds the bmw
allows the driver the freedom to experience the world outside the car
at a high resolution. At slow speeds the car’s highly engineered
precision and craftsmanship are the means which allow it to move from
the drivers mind and to function it the background.
Resolution at high speeds (ignite): car as an extension of the drivers
physical body. When traveling at increasing rates of speed the bmw’s
high performance capabilities begin to merge with the driver’s physiology
with the machine. As the machine comes into a higher resolution for the
driver the outside world is slowly pixilated into a lower resolution.
enact media + technology: The experience of the car is
always in flux between these extremes of resolution. It is understood
that the media/information, exhibit/lounge, and architecture/object will
begin to mirror this situation as a method of highlighting the process
of creating and re-creating the BMW line.
PROCESS (oscillation & flux): objects (in this case the automobile)
are always in the process of being made and remade, hidden and unveiled.
BMW is a dynamic and forward thinking company and the media and technology
insertions should highlight this aspect. “what is the outlook for
technological developments, and what are the driving forces behind these
developments?”
media concept: Live images of the unveiling of the new series BMW are
mixed with pre-recorded/downloaded/exterior images and information over
time to create a dynamic flow of images and information that tracks the
development and evolution of BMW automobiles over BMW Welt time.
1) OSCILLATION/EVOLUTION/TIME: (After a new BMW car line is unveiled it
starts to go out of focus. From this point a new line begins to come into
focus through the development and design process. The space between these
events is a hybrid both of the extreme conditions symbolized by the new
line of automobiles and the ideas used as the inspiration and innovation
for their creation) This oscillation/evolution is expressed through the
use of content that is always slowly evolving as it moves from one state
of ‘completion’ to the next, just as the process of innovation
and inspiration is never static but characterized by constant exploration.
In this way the space is not only used to express the process of creation,
but also its patterns of usage are affected and manipulated to highlight
these different stages of development over a time line that is particular
to BMW Welt.
a) When the new BMW series is unveiled the images captured from it via
the robotic scanning armatures are transported live to the . [To use the
language of the architecture, the unveiling of the car creates a high
pressure system where information/energy from the creation and unveiling
of the car is transported out of BMW Welt both through the actual car
going out and the information it contains and was incorporated into its
making(from new technology to poetry) being distributed outward from this
locus of energy.] The captured information is used to expose the components
of the car as pixels (pieces of DNA) to the public through electronic
display screens.
b) Over time after the unveiling the images captured during the unveiling
are slowly allowed to be influenced by new idea pixels (new DNA information)
that slowly begin to mix together (this process is characterized by the
inward flow of information into the doppel kegel). At the midpoint between
car launches the media is a mixture of the previous series car, the future
series concepts and the art, science and labor involved in their making.
The double cone becomes the most highly flexible at this point becoming
a platform for other events and functions from a library, to a club, a
lecture hall to an art gallery. From this point the space slowly begins
its transformation back to a space of unveiling for the next line.
enact architecture + media: the multiple, oscillating resolutions are
expressed further through the integration of existing architectural forms
with the media and technology proposed.
Technologies proposed:
Car platform- becomes storehouse for information (digital and physical
books are accessible when it raises out of its car platform position)
after the car is unveiled
Table @ lounge- recapitulates the car platform and holds interactive technology
Robot Arms- scan car during unveiling and retract and integrate with ramp
(may move up to the top of ramp at the apex between series unveilings.
Bar- interactive / interchange
Screen(s)- track informations and may ‘pixelate’ into discreet
modules as described
GENERAL OBSERVATIONS:
the procession can offer a global experience (based on informational
downloads to the procession wall) and a localized pedestrian actuated
experience (bmw global bmw local bmw personal)

and art, technology and spirit. The driving experience can symbolize the
seamless weaving together of machine necessity and
Where does media begin and architecture end? What territories
do they share? Where the rubber meets the road.
Local and global. Movement is localized with a global outcome (the destination
and journey). The future exists between the ‘just present’
and the ‘just past’. It is that future that is characterized
by possibility and invention.
Doppel kegel as a space for the creation of memory loops,
interaction loops, experience loops.
Use bmw’s advertising as a basis for camera moves.
The camera is either outside looking at the object of desire or the camera
is united with the object from the personal point of view…..(object
and person are united----brain + soul)
Technology……the robotic arms are technological
devices used to deconstruct the car to reveal hidden informations and
tracings of the soul within the precision engineering. These arms are
also relatives of the same robotic technology developed to precisely machine
and assemble the components of the car.
